I just finished working at a place that calls us "information developers".
Not that I really cared much either way, but it was actually a better
description than "technical writer". I did very little writing--in fact that
was one reason I finished up there.
I'm sure the reason for the name was nothing to do with embarrassment.
I expect they just wanted an umbrella name to cover people such as
indexers, illustrators, editors and non-writing TWs like me who were
contributing to the development of (wince) "information products".
