Excellent observation! You know he's reading all these responses, don't
you? The ones who flounce off so dramatically and publicly always want
to know what's said about them after their departure.
On Tuesday, the good professor responded privately to my post on the
"RE: Wrong? Poor style? OK?" thread (which had the temerity to suggest
that his placement of "only" was ambiguous or incorrect). His message
was angry and insulting. I'm somewhat relieved <g> and not terribly
surprised that it took him only two days to decide that the entire list
(not just me) is unworthy of his superior wisdom.
I'm also amused by the irony: Hailey, like so many other
"post-modernist" academics, maintains that there are no absolutes, that
everything is relative and depends on your point of view or "narrative,"
and that we shouldn't be judgmental. But when challenged or questioned
by someone with a different point of view or "narrative," these
academics invariably condemn the doubters vehemently, reject their
"narrative" absolutely, and exhibit an utter lack of tolerance. To them,
tolerance is always a one-way street.
As Janice said, not a great loss.
IMHO, of course. :-)
