TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Compared with the editing markup options available in PDF or history/change tracking
options in Word and FrameMaker, wikis are primitive. (You can create PDF from almost
every HAT out there---Flare, AuthorIt, Word, FM (with MIFtoGo or Webworks), etc.
I'm not sure about RoboHelp...)
Since there are so many types of wiki products, you might ask yourself
these questions before considering adopting a particular wiki for doc:
* Does it track changes and identify who made the change?
* Does it notify the author when changes to material occur?
* Can you easily approve/reject changes?
* Can it track versions of topics?
* Does it allow you to easily find and reuse existing topics?
* How would you use it in conjunction with source code control?
* Does it allow you to have conditional text?
* Does it have any features to facilitate localization?
* Can you set it up to produce HTML compatible with different browsers?
Just food for thought. The few wikis I've worked with are not anywhere near the
level of complexity of HATs.
Please tell us about your favorite wiki (or a wiki you use for doc) and
the features that make it great. Would love to try it. Probably won't use it for doc,
but wikis do have their place and there are so many to learn about...
