Message Confirmation

Subject: Message Confirmation

After looking back through the messages about confirmation,
I think we'll stick with the current system.

The issue: Require posters to confirm their own
postings to prevent spoofed messages. (Note that
a moderated list was never at issue--I still wouldn't
see the messages before they post.)

Two main schools of thought emerged. 1) Confirmation
and peace of mind would be worth the hassle and
2) don't limit the spontaneous nature of the list.

Because confirmation cannot be implemented on an
individual basis, I hate to inflict it on everyone.

If a message appears on the list from your ID and you
didn't send it, please just forward it to me including,
if at all possible, the complete header. The header
records the domain from which the posting originated and
we can follow up with the postmaster of the offending
site. That is in process with the latest spate of
messages.

If the spoofed message is obvious, please just disregard
it. If there is potential for confusion, please just
post a note announcing that it isn't real. DO NOT
DISCUSS the spoofed postings on the list. Thanks!

Let me know if you have any questions. BTW, any
comments on the new list message footer (at the end of this
message or at the top of the digest) would be
welcome.

Eric
