This isn't really about message confirmation options, but relates
to the operation of the list.

A few posters have been vocal in opposition to a moderated list.
And Eric does not appear to be interested changing the list to a
moderated discussion. However, there may be a few good reasons for
making a change to a moderated discussion.

The list has grown in both volume and number. Also, the need for
spontaneous interaction may be minuscule in relation to meeting the
purposes of the discussion. A moderator could redirect marginal
postings or group posts within a thread.

Although some may fear that the rhetorical nature of the discussions
would suffer as a result of time added by a moderation process, such
a change would likely raise the overall quality of the interactions.
And nothing would stop anyone from sending a message directly to
other participants.

I realize that an attempt to suggest that everyone submit their
contributions to the approval of a moderator may meet with some
contention. However, several other lists do fine by moderation.
If everyone wanted a moderated list a moderator would still need
to be chosen (this may be the listowner or someone else). An
academic department or the STC might consider supporting the
moderation of a discussion for technical communication.

Hope that this can be of help.

Until later,

Ron
