TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I've used two of those tools: Doors and Rational Suite. Of the two, I much
prefer Rational, since it's built using a database, and the front-end is NOT
Word. It outputs to Word, but you don't have to work in it.
DOORs on the other hand, had one of the least-intuitive interfaces I have
every seen, and crashed repeatedly, supposedly (support said) because of the
Word interface.
If you can get trial versions, do that too. It makes it so much simpler when
you can actually use the product in your environment. Most companies will
allow this.
And Diane is correct: write out your requirements for the tool, even if you
jot them down on a notepad. It's very helpful when talking to the
salespeople, and during any evaluations you do.
